project overview

UK-based company MVV Environment Ltd is looking to bring its expertise in sustainable waste management and renewable energy generation to Canford Resource Park.

This site is an active waste management site, including a closed landfill, located off Magna Road within the unitary authority of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council. The proposed development is an Energy from Waste Combined Heat and Power (EfW CHP) facility that will be Carbon Capture Retrofit Ready (CCRR).

project description

project description
The proposed facility will complement Canford Resource Park’s existing waste activities and be sited on land previously developed for a much smaller energy from waste facility which is no longer operational.

MVV’s proposal is to treat up to 260,000 tonnes of residual waste per year, generating over 30 MWe (gross) of electricty, with around 28.5 MWe available for export to local businesses, via a private wire connection, and to the National Grid.

Approximately 5 MWth of steam would be available to provide hot water for heating to users in the new Magna Business Park currently under development; future expansions of the CHP network from Magna Business Park would be possible to meet existing and new users’ requirements.

the waste hierarchy
1. Reduce the amount of waste we create
2. Reuse as much as possible
3. Recycle more
4. Recover energy
5. Residues to landfill

next steps

MVV submitted a Scoping Report to the Local Planning Authority, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council, in April 2022. BCP Council responded with a Scoping Opinion in October 2022 and both of these documents can be downloaded here.

These documents set out the proposal and identify any potential environmental and other effects that will need to be considered and addressed in the planning application.

In January 2023, MVV held public consultation events to share more detail about the proposal and seek feedback from the local community. These were well attended and feedback will be used to inform the planning application documents.

MVV, together with its professional advisers and the landownwer, will develop a planning application for submission to BCP Council. Submission is planned for Spring 2023.
