MVV Environment submits Scoping Report for new Energy from Waste Combined Heat and Power Facility

20th April 2022
MVV Environment submits Scoping Report for new Energy from Waste Combined Heat and Power Facility

UK-based company MVV Environment Ltd is looking to bring its expertise in sustainable waste management and renewable energy generation to the Canford Resource Park. This site is an active waste management site, including a closed landfill, located off Magna Road within the unitary authority of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council. The proposed development is an Energy from Waste Combined Heat and Power (EfW CHP) facility that will be Carbon Capture Retrofit Ready.

MVV have submitted a Scoping Report to the Local Planning Authority, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council. This sets out the proposal in more detail and includes the environmental and other concerns that will need to be addressed in the planning application.

The proposed facility would complement Canford Resource Park’s existing waste activities and be sited on land previously developed for a smaller energy from waste facility which is no longer operational. MVV’s proposal is to treat up to 260,000 tonnes of residual waste per year, diverting it from landfill and exporting around 25 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to the demand of over 60,000 homes, available for local businesses via a private wire connection, and to the National Grid.
Approximately 5 megawatts of heat would be available for export to users in the new Magna Business Park currently under development; future expansions of the heat network from Magna Business Park would be possible to meet existing and new users’ requirements.

In due course Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council will respond with a Scoping Opinion, which will confirm the basis upon which any future planning application should be made and the environmental issues that will be considered.

Thereafter, MVV, together with its professional advisors, will develop a planning application for submission to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, sometime in the second half of 2022.

Paul Carey, Managing Director, said “Our submission of a Scoping Report to BCP Council is just the first step of a formal planning process. An important part of the planning process is to consult the local community, and this we will do as we develop and finalise our proposals. MVV takes consultation very seriously and will work with the local community at all stages of the planning process.”

About MVV

With a work force of over 6000 employees and an annual turnover of around € 4 billion, MVV’s core business comprises the distribution of energy, natural gas and water in Mannheim and other cities, the generation of Energy from Waste (EfW) and other energy projects with a focus on renewables such as onshore wind power and energy efficiency.

MVV Umwelt, a subsidiary company of MVV, has over 50 years’ experience in building and operating waste management facilities in Germany, and is one of the top three companies in Germany in its field. “Umwelt” is the German word for environment, so it operates as MVV Environment in the United Kingdom. In Germany, MVV Umwelt operates five EfW (taking residual household waste) and three Biomass (taking waste wood) facilities, treating 1.9 million tonnes of waste and biomass a year.

MVV entered the UK market in October 2008, bidding primarily for public sector waste contracts across the country. Now established as a responsible and growing group of companies in the UK, MVV operates three EfW and Biomass facilities treating over 600,000 tonnes of household residual waste and biomass a year.
